Der 29. Mai war im Kalender eines jeden Schweizer Spotters dick rot angestrichen, denn an diesem Datum sollte der letzte Tupolev-154-Linienflug Europas ab dem Flughafen Genf abheben.

Meine Vorbereitungen dafür begannen dank einer glücklichen Fügung schon einige Monate zuvor: Der Zufall wollte es, dass genau der Chef des Genfer Apron Management eines meiner Lauberhorn-Fotos für seine Bürowand erwerben wollte. Und so verlangte ich als Gegenleistung natürlich kein Geld, sondern bat um einen guten Foto-Zugang für den Tupolev-Besuch. Und den sollte ich bekommen!

May 29th was an important date for every Swiss aviation enthusiast – it was the date of the last scheduled Tupolev 154 flight in Europe, which was to originate in Geneva.

My personal preparations for this day had started months earlier, with a bit of luck involved too. After publishing my photos of a Swiss A320 performing a formation flight with the Patrouille Suisse in the Alps, I received an e-mail of someone interested in obtaining a print to hang on his office wall. By incident, this guy turned out to be the head of Apron Management at Geneva Airport – and so, instead of asking for money in return, I asked for a favour: if he would be able to get me in a good photo position for the Tu-154 flight. And he sure was!

Mein Betreuer an dem Tag, selbst eingefleischter langjähriger Spotter, hatte noch eine Stunde Schicht als Apron Controller zu absolvieren – ich wurde derweil auf dem angrenzenden Balkon des Ground-Towers parkiert. Bei der Aussicht will ich nicht meckern!

When the day came, the person in charge of me (a passionate and experienced spotter himself) first had to finish his shift as Apron Controller. Meanwhile, I was parked on the apron control tower’s huge terrace, where I enjoyed this fantastic view!

I was perfectly positioned to capture this United’s departure back to the US

Dann ging es flugs ab auf die Ramp, und ein Follow-me-Fahrer wurde abkommandiert, für uns Taxi zu spielen. Ach, immer dieser Verkehr!

Then, we swiftly passed through security checks and headed to the apron, where a follow-me car operator was commissioned to play taxi driver for us

Trotzdem schafften wir es gerade noch rechtzeitig in Position, denn da kam die EW-85748 bereits angerauscht!

We got there just in time – the Tupolev was just thundering down the runway on her arrival from Belarus

Wenige Minuten später rollte sie in perfekter Pose vor uns vorbei – genau so hatte ich mir das erhofft!

A few minutes later she taxied past us, looking gorgeous as ever – just what I had in mind!

Wir folgten ihr zum Standplatz, und bald war das historische Unikat zum Greifen nah!

Dann mussten wir kurz abbrechen, unser Follow-me-Fahrer hatte einen Vorfahr- und Einparkauftrag gefasst. Das störte mich aber keineswegs, denn so konnte ich mich auch auf der Bizzie-Ramp noch kurz umsehen:

However, we had to take a quick break from admiring the Soviet ingenuity as our follow-me car driver was called to guide one of the many biz-jets to its stand. No problem for me, I’ll take that tour around the GA apron anytime!

On the way back, we made a quick stop at these two cargo planes – the TNT 737 wearing the new colour scheme was of particular interest

Dann aber ging’s zurück zu unserem Stargast, und nun, da die Passagiere ausgestiegen waren, durften wir sogar einen kurzen Blick in die Maschine werfen. Juhu!

We then returned to the star of the day and had the chance to catch a quick glimpse of the interior too. Yay!

Danach verabschiedeten wir uns vom Apron, und postierten uns wieder auf der Tower-Terrasse mit perfektem Vorfeldblick. Als erstes kamen mir dort ein paar Busnasen vor die Linse

Thereafter, we bade farewell and returned back to our elevated lookout next to the apron control tower. I made good use of the special view and caught a few Airbus noses first…

The US was represented by a slightly more dated airplane, but it looked lovely nonetheless

Auch an Europaverkehr mangelte es nicht – besonders schön setzte sich die LH-Bobby in Szene, die dank eines Intersection Takeoffs genau vor meiner Nase rotierte. Sie ist übrigens 1 Jahr älter als die Tu-154!

Speaking of old Boeings, Lufthansa brought this veteran to Geneva, which was built one year before the Tu-154!

Dann endlich war – nachdem sie zuvor ihren Slot verpasst hatte – die Belavia an der Reihe. Nach dem Start-up fuhr die Feuerwehr vor und bereitete der exotischen Dame einen würdigen Abschied

Have you forgotten about the 154 yet? Probably not. As boarding all these avgeeks took much longer than expected, they missed their slot and had to wait for over an hour. Finally though, the three engines spooled up, and taxiing through a huge water salute, it finally commenced its journey back home

Nach einem High-Speed-Taxi zur Rwy 23 ging’s dann auch bald los. Umrahmt von einer fantastischen Geräuschkulisse stieg die Tupolev 154 gemächlich und elegant in den wolkenlosen Himmel!

After some high-speed taxi, it was soon ready to go. Its screeching sound mesmerizing all onlookers, the Tupolev 154 finally took off slowly and gracefully.

Es war wirklich ein wunderbares Erlebnis, die Tu-154 noch einmal aus nächster Nähe sehen und verabschieden zu dürfen - und auch sonst genoss ich die speziellen Perspektiven. Ein grosses Dankeschön an Laurent und Jean-Luc! 

It was a fantastic experience to admire the Tupolev 154 from so close for one last time, and a great occasion to say goodbye. Huge thanks to Laurent and Jean-Luc for making this possible, and making this special day ten times more special!
